Hi,
I started my app business last year - and as of today, there are many new changes. The "arena" has changed, but it's for greater good. Of course, it's bad news for those who do not keep themselves abreast of what's going on.
Last year, I took a break from internet marketing because I want to give my 100% attention to this "new" business as this is probably the greatest business to be in (in my opinion).
It's the best business because:
It's independent. It doesn't rely on being a Guru to make money. Some of the students are making money with apps and they're not even internet marketers. And they don't have programming or technical background at all.
It can be automated. If you notice, I'm back into the internet marketing game, launching more internet marketing products. Why? Because my app business is now setup and running on its own - it doesn't require much of my time anymore. They're just running on auto-pilot, making money for me every day. I can now start getting involved with internet marketing business again - which means, I'm having 2 businesses running simultaneously right now. :)
It's a scalable business. Meaning, you can grow this. It's based on very simple metrics - generally, get more downloads would means making more money. It's not like you need to find JV partners, do email marketing, find affiliates, etc.
You're building a solid asset. You have heard of stories of apps being sold for 100 million dollars or something crazy as that. But let's be conservative - even you can sell it for a million or hundreds of thousands, that wouldn't be too shabby, isn't it?
But the reason why I'm writing today is because I want to share with you WHY I'm even more excited with app business than ever:
1. App transfer
In the past, when I was building my app business, Apple does not allow app owners to transfer their apps to other app owners. Which means, assuming that Rovio wanted to sell Angry Bird to another company, they need to sell the Rovio account. And that's bad news because Rovio might have 10 other apps that they do not want to sell.
However, right now, Apple allows you to sell your app individually - including all of the downloads that come with it. This is a very exciting news because you can now be flipping your apps! There are many websites on the internet that allows you to do this, including flippa.com. In another word, maybe you just want to make $10 K or something - you could be selling your app individually.
2. Introducing Workbench
Workbench is Apple's own internal ad network. Just like Google Adwords and Facebook Advertising, you're able to buy traffic to promote your app, within it's "eco-system". Why this is a game changer?
Because not only it makes it extremely easy for you to test if your app's good or not, you can never run out of traffic. In another word, you know you can ALWAYS promote your app to existing iPhone users - at ANY TIME.
3. New Hot Demography Market
Although United States is the leading market, there are many new countries that have "suddenly" boomed. Think localization. Imagine you start creating app for the "local" market - you'll be the king of the hill! And today, the market's here (because Apple has done a good job promoting their iPhones). Imagine if you're living in Singapore, how about creating a Singapore-based app? For instance, an app for the army's national service in Singapore. That's a "new" market on it's own!
And guess what - I didn't even mentioned about Google Android yet. :)
In my next email, I'm going to share with you exactly how I make money from my app - without even selling it.
Take care,
Patric Chan
